New Hidden Scene Below

Under the Peepal Tree

The shade beneath the peepal tree was cooler than the rest of the afternoon, its leaves trembling overhead whenever the river wind found them.

Ananya sat with one knee drawn slightly towards her, the clay cup warm between her palms. Vikram had brought the chai without asking what she wanted.

He had stopped asking some time ago.

She noticed that only now.

“You don’t ask anymore,” she said.

Vikram looked at the cup in her hands, then at her.

“You’ve never said no anyway.”

A smile escaped her before she could stop it.

It was an ordinary exchange. Almost annoyingly ordinary.

And perhaps that was why it unsettled her.

Somewhere between the river, the crowds, the missing footage and all the questions she had stopped trying to answer, they had acquired small habits around each other. He knew how strong she liked her chai. She knew when his silence meant leave it and when it meant ask again. He would slow his steps without looking back when the crowd thickened. She had begun leaving space beside her without thinking about who might take it.

None of it had been discussed.

None of it seemed to require discussion.

A leaf dropped between them and landed near Vikram’s foot.

Ananya watched him lift his cup.

“That’s dangerous, you know.”

“What is?”

“Knowing what I want before I say it.”

He looked at her for a moment, the faintest smile touching his mouth.

“Maybe I recognise it from somewhere… far away.”

Ananya held his gaze.

“You really do enjoy speaking in riddles.”

“Not always.”

“Only with—”

“With you.”

Their words met almost at the same time.

Vikram lifted his chai as though nothing unusual had happened.

quiet, but not forgotten

“The river memory”

There are moments
that don’t belong to time.

They pass through you—
not as memory…

but as something you almost recognise.

Your heart knows.

It always did.

But not everything it remembers
was meant to be found.
